Paper Collage
Art, in one form or another, has been a constant throughout my life. I have
enjoyed exploring and working with many different forms of artistic expression,
most recently settling on collage as a primary focus. Collage is exciting to me
because it allows me to create an image that I find as interesting up close as
from a distance. The textures that can be achieved, both real and visual,
through the use of handmade and hand painted papers inspires me. The addition of
other elements, including crushed minerals, dried flowers, or other items, can
provide further depth and interest. My collages are impressionistic and abstract. I do not attempt to recreate a
specific image, as I might were I doing other forms of painting, instead I
"paint" with the paper to create an illusion of a landscape or to
capture the emotion of a moment. I have always, for example, loved the colors of
the sky at sunset and sunrise, and capture them often in my collages. The papers that I work with come from a variety of sources. Many are Japanese
or Thai handmade papers, some are personally handmade, and others are as mundane
as watercolor papers. I love to use all different weights and textures of paper,
often enhancing the existing color of the paper through painting of my own. I
use watercolors, acrylics, inks, oil pastels, and dyes to change the color and
visual texture that a paper has, thus creating my own personal
"palette" from which to create my images. Thanks for visiting,
